Atlas Labs FL, LLC performs pesticide residue screenings on all products, as required by regulatory guidelines.  Potentially harmful chemicals include: insecticides, fungicides, and plant growth regulators. 

We use liquid & gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS & GC-MS/MS) for full quantitation of 67 different analytes, ensuring our procedures detect low amounts of compounds, keeping users safe and healthy.

Measuring heavy metal contamination is important for all flower, water, food and solvent-based products.  Many states have set limits for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury as these compounds are very toxic to humans.

We test for heavy metal contamination using Inductively Coupled Plasma with Optical Emissions Spectroscopy (ICP-OES).  Our approach enables analysis for metals at low concentrations in the parts per billion ensuring your products are safe to consume.

To produce highly concentrated oils and waxes, solvents such as acetone, ethanol and butane are used to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from hemp plant material.  These harmful solvents must then be removed from final products to ensure they do not pose serious health risks when inhaled or ingested.

We use GC with Mass Spectrometry detection and headspace auto sampling to quantify harmful solvents, impurities, or adulterants down to sub-parts-per-million (PPM) concentrations.

Microorganisms and bacteria are ubiquitous in our world.  They often can grow under the same conditions as hemp and if consumed, these contaminants could lead to serious illness, particularly in immuno-compromised users.  We use qPCR to detect total bacterial, fungal and yeast growth, as well as specifically targeted microbes.

The warm, wet conditions ideal for growing hemp are also conducive to the growth of molds and fungi, many of which cannot be seen by the naked eye but are highly dangerous because they can produce small molecules called mycotoxins (afla and ochra) which are very toxic to humans.  Most mycotoxins are chemically stable and can survive food processing.  Atlas Labs FL, LLC uses liquid chromatography with mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) for full quantitation of four aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, which have been identified by all known regulatory bodies as common in farming and food based processes.

Lipids are substances that can upset the natural function of surfactants protecting the lungs. This can lead to lipid accumulation which may cause pneumonia.  In 2019, a representative of the CDC reported a total of 2,506 hospitalizations and 54 deaths that were likely associated with the presence of Vitamin E Acetate in e-cigarettes and vaping products – though none of the products identified in this report were properly tested or sold in regulated environments. 

Atlas Labs FL, LLC uses combinations of liquid & gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection to distinguish these lipids.  Many other adulterants and viscosity modifying agents can also be measured using our techniques.

Plant Gender Detection Screening

With DNA-based sex testing, it is possible to identify male hemp plants weeks before they show any visual sex features.  DNA is extracted from one of the plant’s leaflets as early as the second set of true leaves.  Males can then be removed from a grow in order to maintain female flowers rich in cannabinoids.  This method is an improvement over traditional visual inspection because it allows growers to identify male plants earlier, more accurately, and with less labor. 

Atlas Labs FL, LLC is able to leverage our qPCR technology to run Plant Gender Detection Assays which can detect one male seed in batches of 50 or 100.  This means that feminized seed producers and farmers who purchase them have a simple and reliable method to confirm seeds are in fact all female.

Macronutrients, like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, are mineral elements that plants need in relatively large quantities to thrive.  Micronutrients, such as calcium and molybdenum, are also essential for plant growth, although at much lower concentrations.  When plants are exhibiting macro and micronutrient levels that are too high or too low, cultivators don’t achieve optimal harvest yields and underperform their competitors; and in a worst case scenario, deficient nutrient content can result in non-compliant crops.

Atlas Labs FL, LLC has partnered with hemp experienced environmental laboratories to measure the macro and micronutrient levels of cannabis tissues so that cultivators can more effectively monitor the health of future crops.
